Red-bellied Woodpecker - Female (Melanerpes carolinus)
Black and white bars on wings, back and tail. Female is distinguished by a prominent red patch only on the back of the neck. Found in woodlands, parks, and suburbs. Nests in cavities of living trees and birdhouses. Is attracted to feeders with suet, fruit, or seeds and in particular, hulled sunflower seed. Length is 9 inches.
